If you’re preparing for Hajj and Umrah, your spiritual journey will be one of deep reflection, prayer, and community. But with millions of pilgrims gathering in close quarters and often under extreme heat, it’s vital to take your health preparation seriously.
At Shivas Pharmacy, we’re here to help you travel safely and confidently with this practical health checklist. From vaccines to first aid essentials, here’s everything you need to get organised before your pilgrimage.
Saudi Arabia requires and recommends several vaccinations for entry and public safety:
1. Meningitis ACWY (Mandatory)
–> A certificate of vaccination is required for visa approval.
–> Must be received at least 10 days before travel and is valid for 5 years.
–> We can provide this vaccine and issue the certificate here at Shivas Pharmacy.
2. COVID-19 (Strongly Recommended)
–> Make sure you’re up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters.
–> Some airlines or entry points may require proof of vaccination depending on the latest guidance.
3. Influenza (Recommended)
–> Flu spreads rapidly in crowded settings.
–> The seasonal flu jab is recommended for all pilgrims, particularly the elderly and those with chronic conditions.
4. Polio (if travelling from high-risk countries)
–> Additional documentation and boosters may be required depending on your travel history.
5. Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus, and Typhoid (Optional but advised)
–> Recommended if you’re at increased risk or haven’t been vaccinated previously.
–> Ask our pharmacist whether you’re due for a booster.

Make sure your medication needs are sorted before your journey:
1. Regular Prescriptions
–> Bring enough medication to last your entire trip, with a little extra in case of delays.
–> Keep all medicines in their original packaging with labels.
–> Carry a copy of your repeat prescription or doctor’s letter.
2. Travel Sickness Remedies
–> Tablets or travel bands are useful if you struggle with nausea on long journeys.
3. Pain Relief
–> Pack basic analgesics such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage headaches, joint pain, or minor injuries.
4. Rehydration Salts
–> These are essential for preventing dehydration, particularly in the heat.
5. Antihistamines
–> For allergies, insect bites, or rashes.
6. Digestive Remedies
–> Include anti-diarrhoeal tablets, antacids, and laxatives—just in case.
We can help you build a personalised travel pack of pharmacy medicines based on your needs. Visit Shivas Pharmacy to speak with our team.
Stay prepared with the right paperwork:
–> Vaccination certificates, especially for meningitis ACWY
–> Travel insurance documents with emergency medical cover
–> Passport and visa copies (keep a digital backup too)
–> List of medical conditions and current prescriptions
–> Emergency contact details, including your GP and family members
The climate during Hajj and Umrah can be extreme, particularly in summer months. Protect yourself from heat exhaustion:
1. Water Bottles
–> Carry a refillable bottle and drink frequently—even if you’re not thirsty.
2. Rehydration Salts
–> Use daily if sweating excessively or experiencing diarrhoea.
3. Sun Protection
–> Use high-factor, non-perfumed sun cream.
–> Wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-coloured, loose clothing.
4. Cooling Items
–> Consider a portable fan, cooling towel, or water mist spray for extra relief.
Bring a compact, easy-to-carry first aid kit including:
–> Antiseptic wipes and cream
–> Plasters and blister pads
–> Bandages and tape
–> Scissors and tweezers
–> Hand sanitiser (alcohol-free if preferred)
–> Face masks and tissues
–> Thermometer

If you live with diabetes, asthma, hypertension, or another long-term condition:
–> Bring a doctor’s note explaining your condition and medication.
–> Carry your glucometer, inhalers, or blood pressure monitor if applicable.
–> Make a plan for managing your condition in the heat and with increased physical activity.
–> Speak to our pharmacist for personalised advice before you travel.
–> Book your vaccines at least 4–6 weeks before departure to ensure full protection.
–> Consider packing compression socks for long flights to prevent DVT.
–> Store all medication and documents in your hand luggage.
–> Notify your travel group or organiser if you have any health concerns.
