When preparing for a trip abroad, vaccinations are often an afterthought—or worse, overlooked entirely. At Shivas Pharmacy, a trusted travel clinic in Croydon, we frequently hear misunderstandings about the cholera vaccine. While cholera may not be top of mind for many travellers, it’s still a significant risk in certain parts of the world.
To help you travel smarter and stay protected, we’re here to bust the top five myths about the cholera vaccine and explain when and why it matters.
Fact: Duration of travel doesn’t always correlate with your risk level.
While longer stays can increase exposure to contaminated food or water, even short-term travellers can be at risk—particularly if you’re visiting regions with poor sanitation infrastructure. This includes areas affected by flooding, natural disasters, or ongoing outbreaks. Backpackers, those visiting friends and relatives in rural areas, and humanitarian volunteers often face higher risks, even during brief visits.
At Shivas Pharmacy, we assess your personal itinerary, accommodation, and planned activities—not just how long you’re away—to determine if the cholera vaccine is advisable.
Fact: Cholera is a real concern in many popular travel destinations.
While it’s true that the vaccine is used in emergency settings to help control outbreaks, it’s also recommended for certain travellers visiting countries in parts of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Tourists aren’t immune to risk—especially if they eat local street food, drink untreated water, or travel off the beaten path.
Even in otherwise “safe” destinations, there can be regional disparities in sanitation. If you’re not staying in luxury resorts or if your trip includes rural or underdeveloped areas, the cholera vaccine could be a valuable layer of protection.

Fact: Caution helps, but it doesn’t guarantee safety.
Practising good hygiene is essential, but it’s not foolproof. Cholera is caused by ingesting water or food contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. In many high-risk regions, even “clean-looking” water or food can be unsafe due to limited oversight and sanitation. Ice cubes, salads, shellfish, or unwashed fruit are common culprits.
The cholera vaccine doesn’t replace hygiene—but it strengthens your defences. It provides protection that gives you peace of mind, especially when circumstances are out of your control.
Fact: The vaccine is actually oral and generally well-tolerated.
Unlike many travel vaccines, the cholera vaccine is taken orally. The Dukoral® vaccine comes as a drink, taken in two doses at least one week apart. It’s painless, convenient, and suitable for adults and children over two years old.
Side effects are rare and typically mild—most people experience no issues at all. Some may notice minor gastrointestinal discomfort, but this usually resolves quickly. Our team at Shivas Pharmacy will explain how to take the vaccine properly and ensure you’re comfortable with the process.
Fact: Timing matters.
To be fully protected, you’ll need to take the cholera vaccine at least one week before your departure. The first dose should be followed by a second dose after a minimum of seven days (but within six weeks), and full protection develops about one week after the final dose. For best results, we recommend starting the vaccine course two to three weeks before travel.
If you’re in a rush, don’t panic—our travel clinic in Croydon offers flexible appointments and personalised advice based on your departure date. In some cases, a single dose may still offer partial protection, and we’ll help you make an informed decision.

The cholera vaccine is an important consideration if you’re travelling to an area where cholera is a risk—especially if your travel plans include rural areas, local food experiences, or uncertain water sources. While not required for every destination, it can offer added protection and peace of mind.
At Shivas Pharmacy, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Our team will assess your individual travel plans, health status, and destination risks to advise whether the vaccine is right for you. Contact us to find out more.
